A GROOM’S GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT WEDDING SUITS

Wedding suits need to suit the groom, be fitted well, allow him to be comfortable and it needs to compliment the bride’s dress and wedding theme.
However one of the most important factors to consider is the style of different wedding suits. The style of groom’s wedding suits will largely depend on the style of wedding you are having. For example, if you are having a casual daytime wedding, there is no need for a tuxedo – a nice suit would do fine. Where as if you are planning an evening wedding reception for 500 people you may want to consider hiring that tux!

There are plenty of wedding suits styles and colours available for either the formal or informal wedding option. Use the tips below to help you decide between them:

Wedding Suits: Get fitted

The best way to buy well fitting wedding suits is to measure up first. Have the tailor measure your waist size, inseam (the length between the crotch of your pants and the bottom of the leg), and jacket size. For groom’s wedding suits it is also best to be measured around the upper arms and thighs as well. Then to avoid any embarrassing incidents like splitting your pants during your first dance or losing your hand in a sleeve in the ring exchange, make sure you try on the wedding suits and everything else a month before the wedding, to see if it still fits. If it doesn’t, get the necessary alterations done immediately! Also keep in mind the following:

  • Wedding suits jackets should fit well but also give you a full range of motion, both buttoned and unbuttoned.
  • One finger should fit between the collar of your shirt and your neck, but no more than that.
  • The shirt cuffs should not ride up when you stretch your arms.
  • Your wedding suits vest should button comfortably and hit just below the waistband of your pants.
  • If you are wearing a vest to a summer wedding, make sure it has a full back, so that you are still looking good when the jackets inevitably come off.
  • Pants should break over the instep, about 1/3 of the way down the shoe.

Wedding Suits: Dress for your shape and personal style

Of course every man wants to look stylish and debonair on his wedding day but be sure to choose the style and colour of wedding suits that suits you. Take into consideration your body shape, height and your normal, everyday style and personality. As a general rule single-breasted jackets are best for shorter grooms, as double-breasted wedding suits jackets will make it seem as if you are drowning-in-fabric and make you appear smaller. For wider men, a lower-buttoning jacket would be most flattering as it will elongate your silhouette.

Wedding Suits: Consider comfort

There are plenty of grooms wedding suits, accessories and shoes available for every budget so there is no need to purchase a pair of shoes that will give you blisters or a shirt that has a painfully stiff collar. Finding the right wedding suits and outfits means finding the one that is going to look good and be comfortable at the same time. Take the time to shop around and try on a range of different wedding suits before you decide.

Wedding Suits: Grooms suit trends

The current trend for grooms is to wear lighter wedding suits in less traditional colours. Blues and greys are ideal for all seasons, while creams and whites wedding suits are most appropriate for summer weddings. Khaki is also becoming popular for wedding suits. However if you are having a formal wedding then it is still customary to wear a dark tuxedo, bow-tie and waistcoat. For inspiration look at bridal magazines and websites, men’s magazines like GQ and blogs like "The Urban Gentleman".
